Human Evolution: Dreaming
One interesting thing about bodywork is the focus on the body. The body, this exquisitely designed body that we human beings possess, is what makes us different from leopards, and whales, and eagles. It’s a body designed as an expression of our minds and spirits, a vehicle that both creates and supports the never ending stream of thoughts that come from the bubbling spring at our source.
Why do so many of us love mobile phones? Why do most of us like blue jeans and facebook, or coffee or candlelight? The Olympics, hot tubs, snowy mornings, a great movie? As humans, we are on a never ending search for the good, and the good emerges from what we are, and what we’ve created as a species on this beautiful blue planet.
Our bodies are wired to express our deep creativity, our spirits, our visions. Our finely controlled hands, our ability to move and balance while using them, and our deep need to connect with each other and form groups, are all an expression of what we are as humans…the amazing, expressive, coordinated body of beings that bring our visions to life. Our bodies and our urges are designed to express our potential fully.
And that potential is to imagine great things and do them. From paintings to books to skyscrapers to train systems to airplanes to restaurants to love poems to a simple youtube video, we dream. And then we use our fine hands, our amazing eyes, our powerful minds, and our immense social structures to make those dreams real.
And then we feed the results back into this great, amazing mass of humanity, so that the dream of flight made real then becomes the vehicle for someone else’s dream to see the world, which feeds another person’s dream to help poor children in distant lands, and on and on.
Someone even dreamed us, and so we came to be, our own dreams connecting with the people around us to create new visions, new imaginings…our bodies moving and spirits soaring to create the world we see around us.
Without dreams, we are just lonely organisms looking for food and seeking solace. So when we dream, let’s dream big, and remember…dreaming is what we’re made for.
