Holding Hawaii
We went to Hawaii, four of us, and had a beautiful time. There was peace, and connection, and great feelings. As my friend said, she felt her soul tremble with joy.
Why did we feel so good? I thought about this on the last night. There are many things we were doing:
We were connecting with each other.
We were living in beautiful nature.
We were eating very healthy food (mostly…but Hawaii has very good hamburgers)
We weren’t worried about work.
We got bodywork…massage, Esalen massage, watsu.
We meditated and danced.
We flowed. We had plans, but not rigid ones. We let our feelings tell us where to go next, whether it was eating at a restaurant, shopping at a natural food store or just sitting above the ocean and meditating over the waves.
And then, on the last day, we got ready to return to the real world.
And I realized, we can take part of the trip with us. It wasn’t that we were “on vacation” that gave us the good feelings, it was the way we acted and thought, and what we saw and experienced.
We can’t bring it all back, but we can bring some of it back. We can carry some of the great feelings back into our regular lives.
We can connect with friends, spending an evening forgetting the world outside.
We can enjoy nature, for even a few moments a day. Look at a tree and take a deep breath. Spread plants and flowers through our house.
We can eat great healthy food.
We can forget about work and any troubles we’re having, even for a half hour a day.
We can get bodywork, meditate, dance in the morning.
We can flow. We can stop planning our lives for a little while, and just do something that feels good in the moment, even if it’s going to a new coffeeshop, taking a different way home, or sitting in a park and watching the people go by.
And finally we can remember. I can close my eyes anytime, and flip through the moments of the trip like pages in a beautiful little book. And every time I do it, it makes me smile and feel warm inside.
